A growing range of treatments for dry eye and blepharitis

Eye discomfort with soreness or grittiness can be a feature of several common conditions:

  • Dry eye syndrome, or dry eye disease (DED), where the eyes do not make enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, resulting in eye inflammation and irritation;

  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins), although not usually serious this can be long term and uncomfortable;

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) where the oil glands around the eye lid margin are blocked with thickened secretions, changing the tear film and exacerbating eye symptoms and eyelid inflammation.

    Fortunately, people can self-treat to quickly and effectively reduce the sensation of dry, irritated or gritty eyes associated with these conditions. Research has shown that patients applying a warm compress to their eyelids for 5 minutes daily for 2 weeks had fewer DED-associated
    symptoms and tears did not break down so rapidly.1

    Similarly in MGD, applying gentle heat for at least 4 minutes can help liquefy the meibum and enhance tear film quality. For optimum
    effect, the eyelids should be gently massaged and cleaned of the liquefied secretions. To then help keep dryness at bay, lubricating eye drops and/or gel can be used on a regular basis.

    3-STEP PROCESS

    The Clinitas range can support the management of dry eye discomfort following this 3-step process (heat, massage and cleanse, lubricate) with its newly upgraded eye compress, along with eye drops and gel.

    It is recommended that a warmed Clinitas Antibacterial Eye Compress be applied for 7-10 minutes twice a day for at least 2 weeks. Clear instructions set out how the compress should be microwaved to around 40-42°C. To help prevent cross-contamination and prolong usability, the Compress incorporates Sterileyes® antibacterial protection which is proven to dramatically inhibit and eradicate potentially troublesome bacteria even when used repeatedly.2

    Bound to the fibres of the fabric, Sterileyes® also inhibits the growth of germs that synthesize fats and lipids which create odour and cause staining, allowing reuse more than 200 times.

    KEEPING DRY EYE AT BAY

    Clinitas eye drops contain sodium hyaluronate, considered the ‘gold standard’ for dry eye relief with its lubricating and protective qualities. Clinitas Soothe has the highest strength sodium hyaluronate available (0.4%), intended for moderate to severe conditions, while the brand extension of Clinitas Hydrate 0.2% can be used for mild to moderate symptoms. Clinitas Hydrate contains 0.2% carbomer in an easy-to-use liquid gel drop formula. This is ideal for use overnight or to be put into the eye first thing. The products help build patient loyalty as users love the convenience of keeping vials in different places so that instant dry eye relief is always on hand.
