BioLon® Prime

BioLon® Prime

BioLon Prime is a 1.2% higher viscosity OVD used as a viscoelastic aid in cataract and other ophthalmic surgery.
BioLon Prime is a sterile 1.2% solution of highly purified, high molecular weight viscoelastic sodium hyaluronate in phosphate-buffered saline. Sodium hyaluronate is a physiological material found in both animal and human tissues. BioLon Prime is a very highly purified product extracted from bacterial cells.

Product information

The addition BioLon Prime in the UK gives surgeons the choice of two BioLon® viscoelastics. BioLon® Prime was developed to offer an OVD with a higher viscosity than BioLon® in order to give better protection to the eye. The viscosity of BioLon® Prime is more than double than that of BioLon®.

When introduced into the anterior segment of the eye during surgical procedures, BioLon Prime maintains a deep anterior chamber throughout surgery, facilitates surgery and reduces trauma to the corneal endothelium and surrounding tissues. Its viscoelasticity also helps to repel the vitreous face and discourage formation of a postoperative flat chamber. Any traces of BioLon Prime left in the anterior segment of the eye after surgery dissipate through Schlemm's canal within a week.

Sodium Hyaluronate found in BioLon Prime is a polysaccharide consisting of a repeating disaccharide of N-acetylglucosamine and sodium glucuronate, linked by alternating ß-1,3 and ß-1,4 glycosidic bonds. Chemically identical in all species, hyaluronate can be found in the vitreous and aqueous humor of the eye, in synovial fluid, in skin and in the umbilical cord.
